O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high-school student. She made it into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' excitement for the performance. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She was a victim of significant loss during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put in the bottom three spots and the bottom two spots and bottom two, respectively. Judges were amazed by her performance and advised viewers to choose those who sing well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil was consistently giving stellar performance since then, never finished lower than the third place. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil beat Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was announced by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
